Kids and Company with Mrs. Hughes - This week Mrs. Hughes meet with the class to talk about the Check First Rule. The children learned that it is important to check first with their parents or a caregiver before: walking away in a public place, wandering to the water at the beach, going out to play with a friend, etc.
What We Learned in Kindergarten This Week:
Literacy and Science: This week we focused on reading with fluency and editing our writing. As a class we are practicing reading simple sentences or poems. We practiced using strategies to sound out new or unfamiliar words. We typically read a poem every day for a week. Children enjoy using the pointer to read the poem to the class. We read with expression and fluency. We are also working to edit our writing. We look for ending punctuation, beginning with an upper case letter and using lower case letters consistently and with correct formation. We check our writing for spaces between words. We also check to make sure our sentences contain a complete thought and make sense. Finally, we check our illustrations to make sure they match our writing. We ended the week by working with our third grade buddies to write Spring poetry. Next week we will be learning about writing with perspective.
Math: This week we continued to work with the friends of ten. We are adding and subtracting numbers 0-10 using multiple strategies. The students are beginning to work with addition and subtraction using numbers greater than ten. Next week we will begin a new unit on measurement.
Science: This week we built two habitats. We built a habitat for six pillbugs that now live in our classroom. We planted seeds in our pillbug enclosure so that they can feed themselves. We also built a habitat for two goldfish. We voted on names for our goldfish. The orange fish is Fireball and the Golden/Brownish fish is named GB for Golden brown.
